A beautifully detailed vintage silverplate demitasse cup and saucer set, richly decorated in a romantic cameo-style repousse design. The cup features a classical profile medallion framed by garlands and bows, evoking the elegance of neoclassical revival pieces so beloved in late 19th to early 20th century decorative arts.

The interior retains a soft gilt wash, adding warmth and contrast, while the sculptural handle and pedestal base elevate the piece beyond a simple demitasse—this is a display-worthy object as much as it is functional.

The Story Behind Pseudo Hallmarks

This piece bears pseudo hallmarks, decorative marks designed to resemble traditional silver hallmarks but not indicating solid silver content.

Pseudo hallmarks became especially popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly on silverplate wares produced in England and the United States. These marks were often used to evoke the prestige of earlier sterling systems—such as those seen in Sheffield—without implying legal silver purity.

Rather than indicating sterling silver, pseudo marks functioned as branding or decorative devices. They often mimic symbols like shields, animals, or letters arranged in hallmark-style groupings. Pieces like this were produced using electroplating techniques, bonding a layer of silver over a base metal.

This piece has been acid tested and is confirmed to be silverplate, not solid silver.
