A distinguished set of twelve mid-19th century American coin silver knives by Henry David of New York, active circa 1846–1867.

Each blade bears the eagle device, the HD maker’s mark within a lozenge, and profile pseudo-hallmarks associated with this respected New York silversmith. These marks place the set firmly in the pre-Civil War era, when American coin silver was standard prior to the widespread adoption of sterling in 1868.

The blades are crafted in .900 coin silver and paired with elegant Mother of Pearl handles. The pearl retains a soft, luminous glow that only time produces. Classic silver ferrules complete the refined silhouette typical of mid-19th century dining appointments.

Each knife is monogrammed MHW on the blade, adding to the sense of provenance and lineage.

Historical Context

Henry David worked in New York during a formative period in American silver production. Coin silver (typically .900 fine) represents an earlier American standard predating sterling. Sets of this age with original Mother of Pearl handles and consistent maker’s marks are increasingly uncommon.

Styling

These are heirloom dining pieces — ideal for a historic table setting, layered into a collected silver service, or used for intimate formal dinners where authenticity matters.

📌 Please Note:

The Oneida anti-tarnish case is a later addition and not original to the knives. All additional decorative objects used in photography are props and not included. We pack with care using reclaimed and eco-conscious materials whenever possible. Questions are always welcome.
