Wonderful vintage Navajo/Diné sterling silver and turquoise bear pendant by Jerry Roan (1919–1977).
This substantial handcrafted piece is formed as a stylized bear and features a beautiful blue turquoise cabochon set in a serrated silver bezel. The body is richly decorated with hand-worked geometric and curved motifs, applied silver drops, incised detailing and dramatic openwork that gives the bear wonderful dimension.
The reverse is clearly stamped STERLING and bears Jerry Roan’s distinctive hallmark, supporting attribution to this important Navajo silversmith.
Roan began working actively as a silversmith around 1968 and won First Place at the Navajo Tribal Fair in 1969. His work was later included in the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture’s Jewels of the Southwest exhibition and is represented in the collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian.
The combination of the recognizable bear form, turquoise, substantial 27.2-gram weight and documented artist signature makes this a particularly appealing example of Roan’s work.

Condition
Very good vintage condition with surface scratches, patina and normal signs of previous wear consistent with age. Turquoise has natural matrix/variation. Please review all photographs carefully as they are an important part of the condition description.
