Whimsical, collectible, and a documented book piece—this vintage figural brooch is the “Chinese Water Boy,” designed by Louis C. Mark for Rice-Weiner & Co. in 1941. The design was patented September 16, 1941, Patent No. 129,573, and is documented in American Costume Jewelry.
The dimensional Goldtone figure carries a shoulder pole with two dangling floral glass beads, creating wonderful movement. His soft green-blue enameled top, sparkling rhinestone pavé shorts, detailed hat and shoes, and colorful floral beads make this an exceptionally conversation-starting piece of 1940s costume jewelry.
Interestingly, the reference book notes that the Rice-Weiner design was inspired by a precious-jewel version created during the same period by Trabert & Hoeffer for Mauboussin.
A fabulous statement brooch with wonderful dimension, movement, and—best of all—a documented place in American costume jewelry history.
