Beautiful antique Victorian English Birmingham sterling silver vesta match case, dating to approximately the late 1870s–1880s. This small pocket match safe features elegant hand-engraved scrolling foliate decoration, a hinged lid and the traditional striking surface along the bottom edge for lighting matches.
The front is engraved with an ornate period monogram, possibly “BM.” The intertwined script makes the initials difficult to determine with certainty, so please review the photographs for your own interpretation.
The case bears a set of English sterling silver hallmarks for Birmingham, together with the maker’s mark WN. The date letter is visible but worn/indistinct and cannot be confidently identified. For this reason, we are conservatively dating the vesta to the late 19th century, approximately late 1870s–1880s, rather than assigning it a specific assay year.
Vesta cases were designed as portable containers for matches and became fashionable personal accessories during the Victorian era. Their compact size, decorative engraving and distinctly period function make surviving sterling examples particularly appealing to collectors of antique English silver, Victorian vestas and match safes.

Condition
Antique pre-owned condition with expected surface scratches, patina, rubbing and wear consistent with age and use. The engraved decoration remains attractive. Hallmarks exhibit wear, particularly the date letter. The match striker is present along the bottom. A wonderful diminutive piece of Victorian silver for an antique sterling collection, curio cabinet or display of small English silver objects. Its elaborate engraving and original match-striking surface give it wonderful period character.
