Beautiful antique Reed & Barton silverplate sugar tongs featuring an elaborate Aesthetic Movement bird, flower and foliage design, likely dating to the late 19th century.
The decorative handle is the star of this piece. Within an architectural cartouche is a small bird surrounded by flowers and leafy branches, with additional botanical ornament continuing down the handle. Nature, birds, flowers and asymmetrical decorative elements were favorite themes of the Aesthetic Movement and transformed even practical Victorian tableware into miniature works of decorative art.
The tongs terminate in charming three-pronged claw ends, designed for grasping individual sugar cubes from a sugar bowl.
