A wonderful antique silver-on-copper warming dish designed for elegant table service. This substantial rectangular server features a handsome gadrooned border, decorative double handles and, most importantly, a built-in hot-water reservoir beneath the serving surface.
A small hinged opening at the side allows the lower chamber to be filled with hot water, warming the upper dish and helping food remain warm during service. Before electric warming trays, pieces such as this were an ingenious and elegant solution for keeping vegetables, meats and other dishes warm at the dining table.
The silver plating is over copper, with areas of copper showing through from generations of use and polishing—a wonderfully evocative characteristic of antique silver-on-copper tableware.
