A wonderfully romantic antique gold-filled crescent moon and star locket, complete with the ribbon shown and filled with the symbolism that made Victorian jewelry so fascinating.
The front features a sweeping crescent moon set with graduated paste stones accompanied by a single star. In the Victorian era, jewelry was often far more than decoration—flowers, animals, celestial motifs and gemstones could communicate messages that the wearer and giver understood.
🌙 Crescent Moon Symbolism: The crescent moon was associated with love, fertility, feminine energy and new beginnings. It was also considered a protective motif, traditionally believed to guard against negativity. Romantic folklore even associated the crescent moon with helping unmarried people find their soulmate.
⭐ Star Symbolism: Stars traditionally represented hope, guidance and light—a beautiful sentiment when incorporated into a piece of jewelry intended to be worn close to the heart.

But this locket has another story to tell.
The reverse is beautifully hand engraved “O.B.Y. to A. Spellings”, with an elaborate floral engraving between the names. We may never know the story of O.B.Y. and A. Spellings, but the inscription transforms this from simply an antique jewel into a surviving token exchanged between two people long ago.
The locket opens to reveal two compartments originally intended to hold photographs or locks of hair—one of the most intimate traditions associated with antique sentimental jewelry. The interior does not retain its glass.
