Description
Wonderful antique cast iron fabric pleater (also known as a fluter) featuring beautifully ribbed brass rollers, hand crank with turned wooden handle, decorative gold pinstriping, and its original table clamp. The base is cast with PAT. NOV. 2, 1875, dating this example to the late Victorian era.
These specialized textile tools were used by seamstresses, dressmakers, milliners, and home sewists to create crisp pleats, ruffles, and decorative fluting in fabric for dresses, collars, cuffs, aprons, bonnets, and household linens. The adjustable pressure screw allowed different fabric thicknesses to be accommodated while the fluted brass rollers formed uniform pleats as the fabric passed through.
Today, these machines are highly sought after by collectors of antique sewing tools, textile history, Victorian décor, and farmhouse displays.
Condition
Very good antique condition with expected wear from age and use. Original black painted finish with decorative gold accents remains. Brass rollers show an attractive aged patina. Hand crank turns the rollers smoothly, adjustment screw functions, and the original table clamp is present. Please review all photographs as they are part of the description.
