Some antiques come with not just beauty, but a precise date stamped right into their history. This Victorian dessert set by Martin Hall & Co. is one of those rare treasures — bearing the English kite mark for February 6, 1868.

About the Maker

Martin Hall & Co., founded in Sheffield in the early 19th century, was one of England’s most respected silver and electroplate manufacturers. Known for exceptional quality and ornate designs, they exported worldwide and supplied some of the finest retailers of the era.

The Dessert Set

  • Comprising: 4 large berry spoons, grape scissors, and two nutcrackers
  • Spoons: 8.25” long, silver plate with a warm gold wash to the bowls, featuring a detailed repousse berry motif framed with scrolling borders on the handles
  • Grape scissors: 7” long, finely detailed and perfectly functional
  • Nutcrackers: 5.5” long, matching the ornate style
  • Case: Original Leather presentation box, interior lined with deep blue velvet and satin in the lid

This is not just a set of utensils — it’s a statement of Victorian dining elegance.

What Is The English Kite Mark?

Stamped with the 1868 registration date, this mark tells us the design was officially recorded in that year. The kite mark system, used between 1842 and 1883, allows collectors to pinpoint the exact date and material of a registered design.

Condition

The set is in beautiful antique condition, with the silver plate retaining its shine and the gilt wash still glowing warmly in the spoon bowls. The case shows only light age wear and still opens and closes smoothly — a testament to its quality craftsmanship.

Why Collectors Love It

  • Complete original set with all pieces present
  • Highly decorative repousse berry design
  • Exact registration date confirmed by kite mark
  • Rare to find in original fitted case with maker’s satin lining
