Pair of Victorian Cranberry Glass Mantle Lusters with Prisms, circa late 19th century. Each stands approximately 15” tall by 7” wide, crafted in rich ruby glass with scalloped rims, gilt trim, and hand-painted enamel floral decoration. Two rows of cut glass prisms catch and reflect the light beautifully, creating a dramatic display.
Condition: In good antique condition. No chips or cracks to the glass. Some gilt and enamel wear consistent with age. One prism has been replaced and is slightly shorter than the others. Some wiring is newer and not original. One luster itself measures just a tad shorter than the other — a natural variance often found in true antiques. Both present beautifully with superb color and sparkle. Some crystals have flea bites or may present some chipping, nothing though that would detract from the overall beauty and charm of this magnificent pair.
A dramatic pair of Victorian lusters, perfect for a mantel, dining room, or collection of fine antique glass.
Mantle lusters are decorative glass vases or candleholders, most often produced in the mid-to-late 19th century, designed to sit on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or dining table. They are characterized by rows of hanging cut-glass prisms that catch and reflect the flickering light of candles, gas lamps, or fireplaces — creating a dazzling, sparkling effect in the room.
What are Mantle Lusters?
Originally, they served both a practical and ornamental purpose:
- Practical: The prisms refracted light, brightening interiors before electricity.
- Ornamental: They were a sign of wealth and refinement, often made of colored glass (cranberry, cobalt, emerald) and decorated with gilt and hand-painted floral enamels.
Mantle lusters were status symbols in the Victorian home, often given as wedding gifts or used during special occasions. Pairs were most desirable, meant to frame a mantel mirror or centerpiece symmetrically.
“Think of them as the Victorian version of a chandelier for your mantel — sparkling glass prisms meant to dazzle guests and bring warmth to the room.”
