An exceptional late Victorian to Edwardian covered entrée dish by Mappin & Webb Ltd, one of England’s most prestigious silversmiths and suppliers to royalty. This substantial silverplate piece features a classic beaded border and a domed lid with removable handle, a design made for elegant service in grand homes and fine hotels at the turn of the century.

The lid is engraved with an armorial crest of a boar beneath the Latin motto “HONOR VIRTUTIS PRETIUM” (“Honor is the reward of virtue”), indicating the dish was custom-ordered for an aristocratic household.

The underside bears the full Mappin & Webb Ltd marks, along with the firm’s London retail addresses at 72–73 Cornhill, EC and 177–178 Oxford Street, W, placing the dish between 1890 and 1910.
