Description:
Antique chatelaine mesh purse in silvertone metal, dating from the late Victorian to early Edwardian era. The chainmail body is finely woven with a pointed fringe edge and suspended from a geometric silvertone frame with kiss clasp closure. Designed to hang from a chatelaine, it measures approx. 6.5” long by 4” wide (without chain). The chain handle has a 5.5” drop, suitable for attaching to a chatelaine or carrying at the hand.
The purse is unlined, showing the fine hand-linked meshwork typical of this period. A naturally aged patina adds depth and character. There are a few small holes to the mesh at either side of the frame opening, but the purse remains stable and wearable.
Condition: Good antique condition with expected patina and light age wear. Frame and clasp are intact, chain original, mesh largely complete with minor losses as noted.
Chatelaine purses were popular fashion accessories of the 19th and early 20th century, designed to be both functional and ornamental. This example is a collectible piece of Edwardian fashion history, perfect for display, collecting, or careful wear.
