Exquisite Art Nouveau enameled chatelaine, dating to the late 19th / early 20th century, with three charming attachments: a compact mirror, a mechanical pencil and a small note pad. The design is a symphony of scrolling floral motifs in shades of turquoise, cream, claret red and midnight blue on warm gilded metal, with wonderful age patina that only comes with time.
The clip is a dramatic fountain of stylized flowers, measuring about 2” x 2”, from which three enameled chains fall gracefully to a circular mirror, pencil and notebook. Overall length is approximately 8.75”.
On the left hangs a round compact mirror, about 2” across, with richly detailed enameled front and a bright mirror inside. There is an old repair to the mirror hinge and visible evidence of a replaced fitting at the top (please see close-up photo); it opens and closes but should be handled with care. In the center is a slim mechanical pencil in white metal; the mechanism is present but untested for writing. On the right, a rectangular notebook, about 1.75” by 1.25”, swings open to reveal its original small pages, edged in gilt and beautifully framed by the enamel cover.
The metal is gilded base metal (not tested, assumed non-precious), with expected age-related wear, small enamel losses and toning to the gilding throughout, all consistent with an original Art Nouveau piece that has lived a fascinating life. Overall, this is a rare and highly decorative enameled Art Nouveau chatelaine, perfect for display on a mannequin, in a sewing or writing vignette, or as the star of a collection of antique purses and accessories.
