This set comprises eight antique Gorham ice cream forks in the Strasbourg pattern, crafted from sterling silver (.925). The Strasbourg pattern, patented in 1897, is evident on the forks, which bear a beautiful monogram.

What is an ice cream fork?

An ice cream fork is a medium-sized utensil with a shallow bowl and three or four short tines used for eating ice cream or sherbet. It originated in the Victorian era as part of an abundance of specialized cutlery for specific foods. Ice cream forks were designed to neatly scoop and pierce ice cream served on a plate, preventing the undignified act of chasing the last bite around the bowl.

Appearance:

Similar to a modern spork, but refined and high class. Often made from silver or silverplate, with ornate styles and handles that matched other silverware.

Use:

Proper etiquette dictates using an ice cream fork for sundaes served on a plate, while a spoon is appropriate for ice cream in a bowl.
